Xerostomia, A Dry Subject, by Dr. David Leader, AssociatedContent.com:"People do not usually go to the dentist complaining that their mouth is dry or that they are always thirsty. However, many patients note the sudden appearance of stains, cavities or even thrush, a fungal infection, that herald the development of xerostomia or dry mouth.
Xerostomia is the lessening or lack of saliva. It may be the side effect of medication, radiation treatment or the autoimmune disease Sjögren's syndrome. Smoking and alcohol make the effects of dryness much worse. While easy to diagnose, xerostomia is not easy to correct. Usually, the best treatment a patient can get is advice from your dentist or hygienist on how to decrease the serious and irritating side effects of dry mouth." http://www.associatedcontent.com/content.cfm?content_type=article&content_type_id=3232 ******************************************************
Xerostomia, Deanna Swartout-Corbeil, R.N., Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer:"Xerostomia in cancer patients is primarily caused by the effects of radiation therapy on the salivary glands, usually the result of radiation to the head and neck area. These changes may occur rapidly and cannot normally be reversed, especially if the salivary glands themselves are irradiated. Within one week of starting radiation treatment, the production of saliva drops and continues to decrease as treatment continues. The severity of xerostomia is dependent upon the radiation dose and how many salivary glands are irradiated. Typically, the salivary glands inside the upper back cheeks (the parotid glands) are more affected than others. Salivary glands that are not irradiated may become more active as a way of compensating for the loss of saliva from the destroyed glands." ******************************************************
Xerostomia - Dry Mouth, Ethan Janson DDS:"Xerostomia- Dry mouth is a crucial factor in gum disease, rapidly progressing cavities, and bad breath. Frequently, I examine patients who develop numerous cavities within just a few months due to recently developed dry mouth! Below is a partial list of medications which have been known to cause dry mouth. Salivary gland dysfunction, smoking, dehydration, and other factors may also cause xerostomia. Ask your dentist or physician if you are concerned about this condition. Feel free to call our Downtown Seattle dental office for a consultation." ******************************************************
Dry mouth, Mayoclinic.com:"It takes two quick licks to seal an envelope. If you often reach for tape instead because you don't have saliva to spare, you may have a condition called xerostomia (zeer-o-STO-me-uh) — the medical term for dry mouth. Lack of saliva is a common problem that may seem little more than a nuisance, but it can affect both your enjoyment of food and the health of your teeth. Don't ignore lack of saliva. Although the treatment depends on the cause, dry mouth is often a side effect of medication, and may improve with an adjusted dosage or new prescription." ******************************************************
Definition of Xerostomia, MedicineNet.com:"Xerostomia: Dry mouth. The condition of not having enough saliva to keep the mouth wet due to inadequate function of the salivary glands. Everyone has a dry mouth once in a while when they are nervous, upset or under stress. But if someone has a dry mouth all or most of the time, it can be uncomfortable and can lead to serious health problems. Dry mouth can cause difficulties in tasting, chewing, swallowing, and speaking. If it goes untreated, severe dry mouth can also lead to increased levels of tooth decay and infections of the mouth such as thrush.
Severe dry mouth is not a normal part of aging. It can be a clue to serious systemic diseases such as Sjogren syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, sarcoidosis, amyloidosis, and hypothyroidism." ******************************************************
What causes dry mouth? National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research:"People get dry mouth when the glands in the mouth that make saliva are not working properly. Because of this, there might not be enough saliva to keep your mouth wet. There are several reasons why these glands (called salivary glands) might not work right.
Side effects of some medicines. More than 400 medicines can cause the salivary glands to make less saliva. Medicines for high blood pressure and depression often cause dry mouth.
Disease. Some diseases affect the salivary glands. Sjögren's Syndrome, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and Parkinson's disease can all cause dry mouth.
Radiation therapy. The salivary glands can be damaged if they are exposed to radiation during cancer treatment.
Chemotherapy. Drugs used to treat cancer can make saliva thicker, causing the mouth to feel dry.
Nerve damage. Injury to the head or neck can damage the nerves that tell salivary glands to make saliva." ******************************************************
Xerostomia, The Oral Cancer Foundation:"Xerostomia is defined as dry mouth resulting from reduced or absent saliva flow. Xerostomia is not a disease, but it may be a symptom of various medical conditions, a side effect of a radiation to the head and neck, or a side effect of a wide variety of medications. It may or may not be associated with decreased salivary gland function.1,2 Xerostomia is a common complaint found often among older adults, affecting approximately 20 percent of the elderly.1,3-5 However, xerotomia does not appear to be related to age itself as much as to the potential for elderly to be taking medications that cause xerostomia as a side effect." ******************************************************
Xerostomia, A dry subject? Dr. Omar F. Suarez, D.M.D., F.I.C.C.M.O., F.A.G.D:"Saliva is much more than a mere wetting agent for the teeth and oral tissues, its functions are quite diverse and simply put, Amazing. Some of the functions include; antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses and fungi, Lubrication of the oral cavity, facilitating speech and enunciation, initiation of digestion and the control of pH. The oral environment and the enamel of the teeth are under constant acid attack, under normal conditions the buffering capacity of saliva assists with this defense. As the quantity and or quality of saliva are diminished so is the protection." ******************************************************
Xerostomia, Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:"If you got here via Cotton Mouth, but are looking for the candy, see Cotton Mouth (disambiguation). Xerostomia is the medical term for a dry mouth due to a lack of saliva. Xerostomia is sometimes colloquially called pasties or cottonmouth, the latter especially when occurring as a side effect, primarily after smoking marijuana or during a hangover. Xerostomia can cause difficulty in speech and eating. It also leads to halitosis and a dramatic rise in the number of cavities, as the protective effect of saliva is no longer present, and can make the mucosa of the mouth more vulnerable to infection." ******************************************************

Legal Eagles: Put nursing, law and business together and what do you get? The exciting field of legal nurse consulting!
By Barbara Marquand, Minoritynurse.com:"Gloria Blackmon, RNC, BSN, LNC, LNHA, never met the young man who lost his legs, but after reading over his medical records, the compassion she felt for him was as strong as if he had been her own patient. The young man had been living in an intermediate care facility for developmentally disabled adults when circulation problems in his legs became so severe that both limbs had to be amputated. His parents sued the facility and it was Blackmon's job, as a legal nurse consultant for their attorney, to review the records and determine if they had a valid case." ******************************************************
Combine Nursing and the Law through Legal Nurse Consulting, Meghan Persichino, RN, BSN, LNC, Nursingspectrum.com:"Nursing and the law: While some nurses think only of the possibility of being sued, others understand the power of this partnership in improving health. These forward-thinking nurses are blazing a trail as legal nurse consultants (LNCs).
An Emerging Role
Nurses have been working alongside attorneys for almost 25 years, if not more. These nurses went by titles such as "nurse paralegal," "medical litigation consultant," and other monikers. In some instances, they combined the duties of both the paralegal and nursing professions; there was no uniform role definition." ******************************************************
Switching Gears Becoming a Legal Nurse Consultant Diane Barnet, RN, BA, Nursingspectrum.com:"It sounded so easy. On the strength of a guest opinion piece I wrote about the nursing shortage for The Dallas Morning News, an attorney contacted me in the spring of 2002. I was suspicious. What would a lawyer want from me? "I'd like to send you a case," he offered. "But I don't have any legal background," I protested. "That doesn't matter," he replied. "You can write."" ******************************************************

Medical Information, The Internet, and You
By Janabeth Fleming Evans R.N., R.N.C., Doereport.com:" As a medical-legal consultant and Internet researcher I am asked every day to find authoritative medical literature references for a broad spectrum of topics. The information I am looking for may be used to support a claim, to debunk an expert theory, or to educate the attorney during the course of a case evaluation.
Changes in the way medical information is stored, accessed, and retrieved have created a wealth of health care information. The Internet provides free access to a great deal of the medical literature, either in full text or citation/abstract format. Because anyone with access to the Web can establish a Web page, many medical sites contain little useful information, even though they may be visually appealing. For this reason, the quality of information available varies from very good to poor, and some sites even intend to mislead. It is important to search for peer reviewed information, from an authoritative source. ********************************************************** Chain of Custody, Medical Legal & Law Enforcement Resources Life Care Planning, Legal Nurse Consulting Resources on: The Nursefriendly Please select from the following: ******************************************************
